GRIMMALKIN is a beautifully built 18-foot Fenwick Williams catboat, representing the timeless design and sailing traditions of the classic New England catboat. Constructed in 1991 at The Landing School in Kennebunkport, Maine, the vessel reflects the craftsmanship and traditional boatbuilding techniques taught at one of America’s most respected wooden boatbuilding schools. Designed by noted naval architect Fenwick Williams, the boat features the hallmark characteristics of the classic catboat form, including a plumb stem, round bilge hull, skeg keel with centerboard, and traditional transom stern. The hull is constructed using traditional methods with carvel-planked cypress over steam-bent oak frames and oak floor timbers, providing both strength and the distinctive appearance associated with classic wooden sailing craft. The deck is plywood with a durable Dynel overlay, and the boat features a rounded trunk cabin leading aft to a generous sailing cockpit. A Sitka spruce mast is stepped through the foredeck and supported by a forestay in the traditional catboat rig configuration. The interior layout is simple and practical for a vessel of this size, offering storage forward, port and starboard berths, and a centerboard trunk with drop-leaf table arrangement. Additional features include a small stove, sink, and general storage, making the boat suitable for day sailing or short coastal excursions. Auxiliary propulsion is provided by a Yanmar diesel engine, and the vessel is offered with a Magic Tilt trailer, allowing for convenient storage and transport. With its traditional design, quality wooden construction, and classic New England heritage, GRIMMALKIN represents a fine example of the enduring catboat sailing tradition.
